Good Causes
Kavli, the company behind Primula, has a long history and a strong heritage of producing high quality, wholesome foods for all the family.
It was established by Olav Kavli in 1893 and was run by the Kavli family for two generations, but in 1962, with no heirs to leave the business to, the ownership was transferred to a charitable organisation, the Kavli Trust.
The Kavli Trust is run separately from Kavli’s commercial operations and is managed by an independent board of trustees who direct the work of the trust and decide which good causes it will support. At the current time it is involved with large national and international scientific, cultural and humanitarian projects, with long-term partnerships in place with several organisations and institutions. In addition the Kavli Trust will be giving particular priority to enthusiasts and social entrepreneurs who can make a difference in today’s society.
Unfortunately, The Kavli Trust is not able to accept applications unless their submission has been agreed in advance, so if you would like to be considered please send a brief project description by e-mail to Harald Schjelderup, General Manager, Kavlifondnet at and he will be able to say whether it falls within the priority areas for the Kavli Trust.
In addition we encourage our UK staff to select and support fundraising for a local charity on an annual basis. Staff are invited to make nominations for any charities that they would like to support and then asked to vote. The selected charity then becomes the focus of fund raising for the next year, with Kavli matching the value of any funds raised. Unfortunately we can not accept applications from external sources and all nominations must come from our staff.
The shocking human suffering in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti prompted the Kavli Trust to donate £50,000, which was divided equally between the work of Médicins Sans Frontièrs and Save the Children to help bring relief to the region.
More information on the work of the Kavli Trust can be found at:
In addition Kavli UK supports some local charities and for 2009/10 our staff chose The Children’s Foundation as the focus for fundraising. We also support Fareshare and Caravan, the Grocers Benevolent fund.

The Children's Foundation raises essential funds for medical and lifestyle research to combat childhood diseases and conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism.
It also supports a number of innovative, community-based projects designed to improve and protect the health and well-being of children and young people, both in the North East and nationwide.
Eight members of the Kavli team are taking part in the 2010 Bupa Great North Run in aid of The Children's Foundation, to find out more and to sponsor the runners click on the donate button, opposite.
FareShare is a national UK charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty by collecting surplus quality food products from the food and drink industry and distributing it to organisations working with disadvantaged people in the community.

Caravan is the trading name of the National Grocers' Benevolent Fund, the charity for the grocery industry. Caravan helps people all over the UK who have worked, or are working, in all areas of the grocery industry and have now found that they need some extra support to get by.
