Primula Cheddar Cheese & Onion
-
Summary
Convenient and delicious, cheddar cheese made spreadable..!
Combine a tub of cheese with a small tin of drained tuna and one of sweetcorn for a great sandwich filling or why not spread thickly onto prepared garlic bread for a cheese ‘n’ onion delight. It’s also ideal as a spread to use instead of butter or margarine in sandwiches – full of flavour and it only contains 16% fat, compared to something closer to 80% for butters and standard sunflower spreads. Even Light sunflower or olive oil spreads still contain around 40% fat (10% saturates)..!
And it works just as well as ordinary Primula spreads when used as a topping for jacket potatoes or stirred into pasta to make a rich cheesy sauce.

How is it made?
Primula Cheddar Cheese & Onion spread is made by blending mature Cheddar Cheese with a little Gouda, which is then melted together with water, butter, milk powders, emulsifying salts, onion and onion puree.
Then it’s pasteurised (cooked to 100C and held there for 5 minutes). This means that when it’s packed and cooled, it will have a long shelf life for the shops and after it’s been opened, it should keep for up to 7 days in the fridge at home.
When you look at the Primula Cheese ingredients list, you will see that it’s quite short and there are no E numbers, colours or flavours.
You’ll also be pleased to see Cheese as the main ingredient, obvious you would think, but check the labels of other brands and see how much cheese they really contain..!
We don’t add any salt in the recipe and any salty taste comes from the natural cheeses that we use, along with a small amount of butter and the ‘melting salts’ which help the blocks of cheese to melt and to make a smooth and glossy spread. We have created this recipe to contain a lower level of salt than traditional Primula cheese and it is in line with guidance from the Food Standards Agency for 2012.
With a high proportion of cheese and other milk proteins, Primula is a good source of calcium and protein which the body can use to build or repair muscles and bones.
It’s also a good source of energy for active and growing children (and active adults too!).
